Police pursue NGOs for Fraud
The British Council has reported three Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to the Zambia Police for suspected fraud.
Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo confirmed the development in a statement that the Zambia Police Service has finally received a formal report from the British Council on the suspected fraud by one of the UK Aid funded projects which is the Zambia Accountability Project (ZAP).
Katongo said the report was made on the 09th November, 2017 to the Zambia Police Anti Fraud Unit.
She explains that the revelation follows an internal investigation carried out by the British Council.
Katongo said the Police has since opened an inquiry file in the matter.
ZAP consists of NGOs among them; Zambia Women’s Lobby Group, the Southern African Centre for e Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD), Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP), Young African Leaders Initiative – Zambia (YALI) and Transparency International Zambia (TIZ).
According to the audit report the NGOs had embezzled about US$3.5 million.
