Intra-party elections enhance democracy – PF member
By Staff Reporter
PATRIOTIC Front member McDonald Mulongoti has advised opposition political parties to emulate the ruling party by holding intra-party elections.
Mulongoti, a former Chingola mayor, stated that the PF had proved to be a hallmark of democracy by consistently holding intra-party elections every five years “in the same way the former ruling party, the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) used to do.”
“As such, I am challenging all opposition political parties in our country to emulate the ruling party by conducting the same,” Mulongoti stated in a press statement.
He stated that opposition political parties, in general, needed to inspire confidence in the electorate who expected them to uphold democratic tenets.
Mulongoti stated that it was ironical that the UPND, for example, which had been in existence for 20 years, failed to hold intra-party important elections.
“[It] is an affront to democracy and potentially impede growth of a party,” he stated.
