By Staff Reporter
The Zambia Rice Federation (ZRF) has advised government to regulate importation to rice to safeguard quality and avoid price manipulation.
Diocese of Mongu Development Centre, a member of the ZRF, Business development manager Kebby Kalima said there was a lot of rice on the market whose prices were cheaper than the production cost of the local cereal.
Kalima said unregulated imports had negatively affected the Zambian rice dealers as customers were mostly attracted to the cheaper produce, without knowing about its quality.
He said the situation had been worsened by the Food Reserve Agency’s inability to enough rice from the local farmers.
Kalima has further advised government to fund and promote rice farming.
