Early marriages costing nation – Chadiza DC
By Staff Reporter
Chadiza District Commissioner George Phiri says child marriage is a major impediment to the country’s development and prosperity.
Phiri said the country was losing out on potentially enormous social economic and political contributions that girls could make if they were given the right opportunities from the start, unlike going for early marriages.
Phiri said this on Thursdays when technocrats met to complete submissions from Chadiza and Petauke districts on by-laws to end child marriages.
“Traditional leadership is essential for harnessing the attention to effectively prevent and eliminate child marriages,’ said Phiri. “I’m expressing my gratitude to the people of Chadiza and Petauke who are committed to comprehensive changes that include a range of measures that have been submitted as by laws.”
And plan Zambia Programme Unit manager Richard Kalyata said the legal frame work play a powerful role in transforming norms and protection of girls’ rights.
