Road traffic accidents claim 476 lives so far

A toatl of 476 people died in different road traffic accidents countrywide during the third quarter of this year.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said during the same period 51 children were killed, 141 adults were seriously injured and 202 were slightly injured compared while 65 died.

Katongo further stated that over K11 million was raised from admission of guilty fees in the same period under review, compared to over K10 million

the same period last year.

“During the same period, police recorded a total number of 7, 915 road traffic accidents out of which, 394 were fatal, 1, 517 were slight injuries, 790 were serious injury road traffic accidents in which 1, 443 persons were seriously injured while 5, 214 were damages only,” stated Katongo.

“Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of road traffic accidents with 4, 220 road traffic accidents followed by Copperbelt Province with 1, 120 road traffic accidents. Northern Province and Airports Division were the least with 131 and 34 road traffic accidents representing 16% and 0.4 % respectively. Most of the accidents were as a result of human error, over speeding, drivers failing to keep to their lane and drivers misjudging clearance distance.”
