Food reserve agency (FRA) has managed to buy over 47,000 by 50 kgs bags of white maize from peasant farmers out of the targeted 197,200 bags as of September 5, 2018.

Lundazi district Agriculture Coordinator Micheal Ngulube told Zambia news information service in Lundazi that the reduction in maize purchase was due to private buyers who have invaded Lundazi.

He said Fra has established fourteen maize deports in the area.

“Egichicken deport, in chief magodi has so far bought the highest number of bags while the least number of bags has been recorded at muthunzi satellite deport in chief Mphamba,” said Ngulube

“We are optimistic that maize purchases will increase before the end of the marketing season, which closes on October 31, 2018 since majority of farmers are still harvesting and shelling maize,” he said

He has since warned farmers in Lundazi to be cautious and wary of some private buyers who have a tendency of cheating farmers by fixing the scales they use.
