ZNFU bemoans poor cotton prices

The Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) has observed that ginners are offering lower cotton prices this marketing season compared to last year.
ZNFU president Jervis Zimba said some ginners were offering what he called very poor prices with some as low as K3.00 per kilogram.
He said only one cotton association was offering K4.00 per kilogram.
“The union is cognisant of the fact that there is a major company that is sabotaging the cotton farmers’ drive to recovery by spearheading the price of three kwacha per kg in spite of favourable offers for lint, seed cotton and fuzzy cotton on the international market,” said Zimba.
“The cotton future’s market is bright, hence the need to offer good prices but the buyers want to take advantage of this at the expense of the farmers.”
