COMESA market in flames

By Staff reporter

THE Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) trading market in Lusaka was this evening, Thursday gutted and property worthy millions of Kwacha lost due to the inferno that started around 21:00 hours.

Eyewitnesses said the fire started around 21:00 hours under unclear circumstances but expressed disappointment the fire tenders bought at controversial high cost failed to quench the fire.

“There are about five newly acquired fire tenders trying to put off the fire but they have failed. This is a serious indictment for those who bought these expensive fire tenders – it was really a waste of public money,” an eyewitness said.

Traders were making frantic efforts to retrieve goods from their respective shops.

COMESA market is a trading area for international businessmen/women from the regional bloc in various merchandise, which range from clothes, blankets, liquor and spare parts.
