Luapula NGO saves 220 widows

A non-governmental organisation in Luapula Province has revealed that it has saved about 220 widows against property grabbing.
Justice for Widows and Orphans Association executive director Felix Kunda said through sensitisation programmes, the organisation had managed to empower communities with relevant information.
Kunda said his organisation had formed groups for widows which were being sensitised on their right to property when their spouses passed on.
“This was why Justice for Widows and Orphans Association saw it fit to start engaging widows in rural areas on these issues so that they can be able to know their rights,” said Kunda.
“Through these groups, the association is able to identify widows who are victims of property grabbing and then come up with ways of helping them get justice. “
He said most widows did not know where to complain in the event that property was grabbed from them, hence the organisation helping them with information.
Kunda, however admitted that issues of property grabbing were still high in the country, especially in rural areas.
