A 17 year old girl of Chief Mumbi’s area in Petauke district of Eastern Province has committed suicide by taking maize preservative pesticide.
In a statement police public relation officer Esther Katongo identified the girl as Iveta Mbewe of Kalando village.
Katongo said brief facts are that the family discouraged the girl from getting married to her boyfriend aged 20 years of the same village as she was too young to get married, a decision she did not approve of.
“She was unhappy with the decision, the girl decided to take her own life by swallowing the pesticide, the incident happened on Saturday around 19 hours,” said Katongo.
She added that Iveta was rushed to Minga Mission Hospital where she later died at about 22 hours.
“This is the fourth suicide case recorded by police in Eastern Province within seven days,” she said.
