Prioritise building roads of economic value – East CSPR
By Staff Reporter
CIVIL Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) has asked government to prioritise construction of roads that are of economic value to the country.
CSPR Eastern Province Coordinator, Samson Mbewe said CSPR did not understand why government prioritized the project to decongest roads in Lusaka when most major roads in other provinces of economic benefit to the country were in a deplorable state.
“The Chipata-Chadiza, Chipata-Lundazi and Msoro roads need urgent attention unlike the decongestion project. Decongestion projects are being carried out at huge cost, which could go a long way in constructing and rehabilitating roads in Eastern Province and other parts of the country like the Nakonde and Mazabuka roads,” said Mbewe.
Mbewe proposed that the money for decongesting roads in Lusaka should be channelled towards projects, which can impact positively on economic and human development.
Arcades roundabout will be closed for nine months to facilitate the construction of flyover bridge, as part of a decongestion process under the construction and upgrading of roads and junctions in Lusaka.
The Ministry of Local Government and Housing has contracted India’s Afcons Infrastructure Limited to construct filter-roads and bridges in Lusaka to ease traffic congestion.
