NWASCO warns of punitive action against EWSC

By Staff Reporter

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) has threaten to take punitive action against Eastern Water and Sanitation Company (EWSC) due to repetitive failure to resolve customer complaints of sewer flooding.

In a statement, NWASCO Public Relations and Communications Manager Mpunga Simukwai said the Council’s in-depth annual inspections on the 11 water utilities and 5 private schemes around the country revealed that EWSC were non-compliant to the directives of 2018.

NWASCO Director Kelvin Chitumbo has since directed EWSC to show cause why punitive action should not be taken for not resolving customer complaints of sewer flooding within the stipulated time frame among other directives.

Chitumbo is concerned that the company was not complying with the period required to connect new paid up customers as stipulated in the service level guarantees and minimum service guidelines.

He is however impressed that the water utility company managed to supply water above the service level guarantees in most districts of Eastern Province.

Chitumbo said the water utility has also maintained its metering ratio at 100% enabling customers to pay according to consumption as per government policy.
