GBV cases on the increase – police

A total of 6,139 Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases have reported country wide in the second quarter of 2019, police have disclosed.
Giving an update on GBV cases for the second quarter of 2019, Zambia Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said the figure had increased compared to 6,074 cases recorded countrywide during the same period last year.
She disclosed that a total of 583 were child defilement cases with 10 against boys whilst 573 were against girls.
Katongo said Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of child defilement cases with 250, Southern Province, 81 followed by Central Province with 60 cases while Eastern and Copperbelt provinces recorded 58 and 50 cases respectively.
She said North-western recorded 28, Muchinga recorded 20 while northern had 14 cases with Luapula province recording 8 cases while Western had 11 cases.
Katongo said that the country recorded 20 GBV related murder cases out of which 11 victims were women, 6 men and 3 girls.
“During the period under review, 11 cases of human trafficking were recorded of which 10 were from Western province and 1 was from Muchinga,”she said.
