Police record 2,578 defilement cases in 2018

ZAMBIA recorded a total of 2,578 defilement cases that were reported countrywide in 2018.

 

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo revealed in a statement issued on Saturday that out of the recorded cases, four were boys and 2,574 victims were girls.

 

Katongo has reported that there were also nine (09) cases of attempted defilement involving four boys and five girls.

 

She said Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of defilement with 1,409 cases followed by Eastern Province which recorded 244 cases and that Southern Province was third with 187 cases.

 

She said other Provinces were Central with 183 cases, Copperbelt with 174 cases, North Western with 89 cases, Western with 84 cases while Muchinga and Luapula had 79 and 63 cases respectively.

 

Katongo said 38 cases of defilement of persons with mental illness were also recorded.

 

Meanwhike, Katongo said police further recorded eight (08) cases of Prohibition of Certain Marriages involving school going girls below the age of 16 years who were married off.
