Zimbabwe police apologise to journalists

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has apologised for disrupting the opposition MDC Alliance’s press conference earlier on Friday.
In a statement released immediately after President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Tweet which condemned such action, ZRP claimed mistaking the media briefing for a political gathering.
“We wish to state that police had information to the effect that there was a public gathering which was unlawful and had intention to disrupt the prevailing peaceful environment,” read the statement in part. “The ZRP sincerely apologises and wish to state that we respect freedom of the media, freedom of expression and freedom of association as provided for by the Zimbabwean laws. This isolated incident should not be misconstrued to mean that we are heavy handed. We have a constitutional mandate to ensure that law and order is maintained.”
