Pope didn’t dismiss me – Mpundul

Outgoing Lusaka Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu says there is a lot of toxic material on social media and that people should be careful what they read there.
During a farewell mass held in his honour at the Roman Catholic Church’s Cathedral of the Child Jesus this morning, Archbishop Mpundu said contrary to what was circulating on social media, he had not been sacked by Pope Francis.
“How can I be sacked when I asked for it, ” asked Archbishop Mpundu who has been replaced by Bishop Alick Banda from Ndola diocese.
He said instead he asked for an early retirement from episcopate responsibilities.
“It was something I have been looking forward to since 2003,” said Archbishop Mpundu, who has also been described by his peers as a stalwart of social justice who headed the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops at a crucial time in the country’s socio-political history.
