Chieftainess Mkanda of the Chewa people in Chipangali district has called on Chipangali town council to construct a modern market in the area.

Speaking during the launch of Keep Chipangali Clean, Green and Health Campaign, chief Mkanda said currently, her subjects were conducting business in grass thatched makeshift shops.

She said her subjects were finding challenges trading, especially during rainy season.

“I am also calling upon the local authority to drill boreholes around the trading area, as the place currently has no source of water or running water, and this is posing threat to people’s lives,” said Chief Mkanda.

And the traditional leader has emphasized on the need to maintain good hygiene as her chiefdom is ready to work with the local authority in fostering development in the area.

Meanwhile Chipangali Council Secretary, Beatrice Mulenga said her office will partner with traditional leaders and various stakeholders, including the church, in implementing the campaign in all parts of the district.
