Govt directs councils to hold elections for deputy mayors, vice-chairpersons

LOCAL Government ministry has instructed tall councils to hold elections for deputy mayors and vice chairpersons on Friday July 19, 2019.
In a memo addressed to all town clerks and council secretaries, Ministry of Local Government permanent secretary Amos Malupenga stated that the directive followed the guidance given by the Constitutional Court.
“Reference is made to ministerial letter MLG/64/9/1 in which you were notified to put on hold the above elections awaiting the determination of the matter by the Constitutional Court. I wish to advise that the Constitutional Court has guided on the matter. Further, we have a new Local Government Act No 2 of 2019 in place which has resolved the issues that were raised pertaining to the election to the office of deputy mayors and vice council chairperson,” Malupenga stated.
“Therefore, this is to inform you that all councils should now proceed and hold elections for deputy mayor and vice council chairperson in your various local authorities. The election should be held on Friday 19 July 2019.”
