Govt directs election of deputy mayors, council vice-chairpersons on Feb 22

Government has directed all town clerks and council secretaries, cities, municipal and district councils to hold elections of deputy mayors and council vice-chairpersons on Friday 22nd February 2019.
In a letter obtained by newsdayzambia.com, ministry of local government and housing acting permanent secretary Numeral Banda said all councils should hold elections of deputy mayor and councils vice chairpersons pursuant to the local government act No 281 of the laws of Zambia as amended by the local government (amendment) Act No 6 of 2010 for the civic year February 2019 to the date the current council will be dissolved.
Banda said all councils would be required to submit after elections full names of the elected deputy mayor, or vice chairperson to the ministry through the provincial local government officers in their respective provinces.
“By copy of the ministry circular all provincial local government officers in the Republic of Zambia are informed and requested to assist in disseminating the information in this circular to all principal officers of councils in their respective provinces by the most effective means of communication accordingly,” said Banda.
