Two People die in separate accidents in Eastern Province
A pedestrian has died after being hit by a vehicle in Chipata district while a cyclist died on the spot in another accident in Mambwe district.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Alex Chilufya said Daglous Himoonga of unknown age of Himoonga farm in Msekera area died yesterday after being hit by a Toyota Hilux, registration number GRZ 232 CM, which is Chadiza District Commissioner’s official vehicle.
Chilufya said the driver of the vehicle, Samuel Phiri 31, failed to apply emergency brakes and hit Himoonga who was trying to cross the road around Madzimoyo area on his way from Chipata to Chadiza along the great east road.
Chilufya said the driver and his passenger escaped with minor injuries but Himoonga died on the spot after sustaining head injuries, a fractured left leg and hand as well as internal injuries.
The Police Commissioner said the body of the deceased is in Chipata Central Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem and burial while the driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Meanwhile, Chilufya said a cyclist John Chiwama of unknown age died on Tuesday after being hit by an unknown vehicle at Kambani Village in Chief Mnkhanya’s area.
Chilufya said the driver didn’t stop after the accident and that the police have launched investigations in the matter.
He said the body of the deceased is laying in Kamoto Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem and burial.
The police commissioner has warned drivers against disobeying traffic rules, saying, most accidents are being caused by dangerous driving.
Chilufya has also warned motorists who fail to assist accident victims whenever an accident occurs saying it was a serious offence.
