Dr Chanda calls for increased funding to local government

Bwana Mkubwa member of parliament Dr. Jonas Chanda says decentralisation will make local councils efficient and responsive to the increasing expectations and demands of the citizens.

In a statement, Dr Chanda said the failure by the councils to deliver services such as garbage collection, efficient management of markets and bus stations were mainly due to over centralization of government resources, leaving councils poorly funded,  monitored and managed.

He  further said that it was no longer possible for the central government to effectively supervise local councils with a national population of 15 million people, projected to reach 50 million by 2030.

Dr Chanda called for increased funding to the councils through the Ministry of Local Government.

He added that consequences of poor performance monitoring in local government is evident in lack of accountability and corruption in revenue collection from markets, bus stations and land sales.
