Our taxes do not benefit the poor – Dr. M’membe

The Socialist Party says taxes in Zambia are not used for the benefit of those from whom they are collected, especially the poor.

In an interview with NewsdayZambia.com, the party’s 2021 presidential candidate Dr. FredM’membe  said it was disappointing that taxes were being collected  from the poor who still lacked basic social services such as clean and safe drinking water.

“54 years after independence, people  from Kabanana, Chazanga, Garden and most parts of the country  draw water from the wells and they pay tax. We have a capitalist  system  in Zambia [where] taxes are collected and spent in Kabulonga, Olympia, Woodlands and other suburbs,’’ said Dr M’membe.

He further said in some well organised countries taxes were spent on it’s people  through the provision  of  free education, medical  services  and other social  services  required  in a community.
