Elephants kill 11 in Mambwe district

Chief Mnkhanya of the Kunda people in Mambwe district of Eastern Province has expressed concern over the continued human animal conflict in the area.

Speaking to journalists at the weekend, the traditional leader said about 11 people have so far been killed by elephants in his area this year.

“Farmers also find challenges to conduct their farming activities because the wild animals destroy their crops as well as their houses. Government should control the situation in ensuring that people’s lives are protected from wild animals,” said Chief Mnkhanya.

He asked government to review the special hunting licenses that allowed the Kunda traditional establishment to hunt wild animals during the Malaila traditional ceremony.
