Caritas Chipata express concerns over internet tax

Caritas Chipata says government was supposed to consult stakeholders before imposing tariffs on internet based phone calls.

Caritas good governance programmes coordinator, John Mthadziko Zulu says the policy shift should have been clearly explained to citizens in order for them to understand.

Government has announced the introduction of a 30 ngwee per day tariff to be slapped on internet based phone calls.

According to Chief Government Spokesperson Dora Siliya the use of internet phone calls threatens the telecommunications industry and jobs in mobile service providers.

“am arguing Zambia being a free market economy, mobile service providers are supposed to find ways of attracting their customers who are interested in making phone calls on internet,” said Zulu

He said people are currently complaining of too many taxes imposed on them, stating that this was not the best way of levying internet users as it would turn out to be very expensive to the consumers.
