Lusaka mayor Miles Sampa has launched free trial Wifi service at Lusaka City Council Revenue Hall.

Launching the free Wifi service that is being executed on a three month trial basis, Sampa, who promised a free Wifi in 100 days of his election as Lusaka mayor on July 26, said the programme would extend to other public places to ease communication.

Meanwhile, Sampa said the council would install software that would bar people from using its free Wifi connectivity to download pornography or spread profanities.

“In this campaign we promised to give you, the people of Lusaka, Wifi within 100 days. Today is my 10th day in office and so, I still have 90 days. But I have called you to officially launch the free Wifi service and where you are here, the Revenue Hall of the Lusaka City Council, we have installed free Wifi on a three months trial basis,”

The free Wifi at the Civic Centre’s Revenue Hall has been installed by Techmate Solutions Limited, a Zambian company whose technical director, Chilufya Musosha, was present during the launch.

Sampa revealed that the free Wifi trial basis installation at the council’s Revenue Hall was done at no cost.

Sampa added that there had been huge interest from companies willing to provide free Wifi to the Lusaka City Council.

“While every doubting Thomas was, ‘it can’t be done, the mayor is crazy; he just wants votes.’  It’s 10 days now, you are counting…. We have launched today, each time you come in this Revenue Hall to pay bills to the council, if there’s a long queue you will be able to have free Wifi,” he said.

“We will be doing the same  all markets, say Inter City ‘market,’ Kabwata market, Luburma market. Other companies that also want to provide us trial, we are also giving them the platform to show us how their products work. Thereafter, when we’ve tried many participants, then we will open the tender to pick the best company that will provide this Wifi to the council. But we will not pick one company and so, we will have different companies at different bus stops and different companies providing free Wifi at markets. So, it will be an open bid. Yes, believe it or not; it’s free Wifi!”
