A 32 year old man of Vubwi district in Chief Pembamoyo’s area has committed suicide after forcing his two biological children to take poisonous pesticide.
Speaking in an interview with Zambia News & Information Services in Chipata on Wednesday, Eastern Province Commissioner of police Luckson Sakala said Brighton Phiri of Nyongani village forced his children Gabriel and Jasiman to take a pesticide before doing so himself.
Sakala said Phiri committed suicide after his wife abandoned him following a marital dispute and went to get married to another man in neighboring Mozambique.
He said the three went missing on July 23, 2018 but their bodies were only discovered on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 in a nearby bush, about 800 metres from the village.
“Police went to the scene and inspected the decomposed bodies and advised the family members to go ahead with burial as no foul play was suspected,” said Sakala.
Meanwhile, police officers in Malawi have managed to arrest two criminals who stole a Toyota Hilux at Kwamanda Lodge at Mwami Boarder on Monday night.
Sakala said the vehicle was stolen between 20:00 hours on Monday and 06:00 hours Tuesday when the owner discovered that the vehicle was not at the place he had parked.
“The matter was quickly reported to Mwami Boarder Police Post and police officers transmitted the details of the missing vehicle to their counterparts in Malawi. The vehicle was spotted passing through a check point at Kamwendo in Malawi and police made a follow up and managed to intercept it as it was about to enter Mozambique,” said Sakala.
He said there was exchange of gunfire between police officers and the criminals but one criminal was shot in the leg.
“The criminal who was shot is Zambian while the other one is from Malawi and is currently in police custody in that country,” Sakala explained.
