The Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation has fired its president, Liseli Sitali, for being unemployed.
According to the Union’s rules, anyone holding the office of president should be an employee within the health sector.
In statement released Friday and signed by a Michelo Fray, Sitali has since been replaced by Tisa Chiponda.
“Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation (ZUNO) would like to inform all its structures and members on behalf of the national council (NC) that after its constitutional meetings to discuss Mr. Liseli Sitali’s employment status and secondment to ZUNO, a prima facie case of unemployment was established and consequently not seconded for the tenure of office as ZUNO president; which is not in accordance with the provision of Article 22(ii) of the ZUNO constitution and Article 18(i) a of the Industrial and Labour Relations Act CAP 269,” the letter read in part.
“Against the above background, we lament to inform you that from 26th June 2018, Mr. Liseli Sitali’s membership to ZUNO was withdrawn and consequently terminating his contract as ZUNO president, this was after a consultative process that took close to two months. May I further inform you that the National Council exercised its mandate in accordance with the ZUNO constitution, to put in someone through a ballot to run the affairs of the organisation as president up to the next quadrennial congress and may I announce that Mrs. Tisa Meleka Chiponda from Copperbelt Province who was at the time ZUNO vice president professional affairs was elected as president and she will need support from all ZUNO structures and members during her tenure.”
