Mnangagwa suspends campaigns following assassination attempt

Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF has suspended campaign rallies until the people who attempted to assassinate President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Bulawayo on Saturday have been brought to book.
President Mnangagwa, the ruling party’s presidential candidate in the crucial election, made the announcement at his Harare office this morning.
“We are suspending the rallies until the culprits who tried to assassinate me at White City Stadium in Bulawayo where I was addressing thousands of Zanu-PF supporters have been brought to book,” President Mnangagwa said. “Continuing with campaigns at the moment will be too risky to me as your leader as well as the staunch supporters.”
He explained the risk was grave because the perpetrators were still at large.
“As soon as they have been caught, the campaigns will resume. It’s too risky because the perpetrators are still out there and we don’t know how serious the damage could be next time in the event they return,” said President Mnangagwa. “We must win with a landslide victory on July 30. Remain vigilant. We won’t be cowered into submission by cowards who want to cause unnecessary confusion.”
President Mnangagwa’s main electoral contender is Nelson Chamisa from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
