Luanshya Council threatens to shut down unpainted structures

Luanshya mayor Nathan Chanda says shop owners in the Central Business District (CBD) and part of Second Class trading area who have not adhered to the local authority’s call to paint their buildings risk their shops being closed.
Chanda said it was unfortunate that some shop owners had chosen to ignore the Council’s instruction even after being given an extensive period of time to adhere to the task.
He gave an example of the Luanshya Post office which was just opposite his office.
Chanda said part of keeping the town clean and attractive to investors included having well-maintained structures that are neat for operations.
“The Luanshya Mayor said Luanshya Municipal Council will be carrying out an inspection this week and those that have not painted their structures must with immediate effect commence the painting or face punitive measures by the Council,” Council public relations officer Janet Kosamu stated in a press release on Monday. “The Mayor has thanked shop owners and business traders who have painted their structures and are keeping their surroundings clean as per request and has encouraged them to maintain the proactive approach towards this earnest appeal, in line with the Republican President’s re-launch of the Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign in April, 2018.”
Chanda, according to Kosamu, has implored traders and all residents to develop a sense of ownership by having a clean town and supplement the Council and government’s efforts to keep Luanshya clean.
“The mayor has further encouraged all residents to adhere to government’s policy by participating in the district clean up exercise every last Saturday of the month and suspending business operations on this day until 10:00 hours,” the statement read further.
