Police rescue girls abducted by Nyau dancers

Police in Chipata have managed to rescue two girls who were abducted by Nyau dancers commonly
known as Gule Wamkulu on Saturday.
Speaking in an interview today, Eastern Province Deputy Commissioner of Police Sharon Zulu said officers were yesterday dispatched to Chief Mafuta’s area and managed to rescue the girls in the afternoon.
She said the girls were abducted after being accused of mocking the Nyau dancers by putting on their masks.
Zulu explained that the girls were later taken to a Nyau secret camp known as Dambweand investigations so far reveal that they were not abused by the dancers.
“The girls were Miriam Phiri and Sera Mazyopa aged 13 and years 19 respectively. The police have managed to pick one person by the name of Isaac Sakala who initiated the abduction of the girls to help the police with investigations,” said Zulu.
Meanwhile, seven armed robbers attacked Mwami Adventist Mission Hospital medical director Dr Ronilo Angand went away with various property.
Zulu said the incident happened on Sunday around midnight at the victim’s residence after the criminals managed to tie a security guard using electrical cables.
“The robbers went away with K7, 000 cash, four laptops, three mobile phones and other small items that have not yet been accounted for. The police have since launched a manhunt for the criminals and investigations are ongoing,” said Zulu.
“The police have picked up two people who were found in a Toyota Corolla that was parked near Dr Ang’s house when the robbery was taking place.”
