Police record increase in RTAs

Zambia police says road traffic accidents have increased in the first quarter from 7, 068 same period last year to 7, 247 this year.
In a statement to the media police public relations officer Esther Katongo said out of the total number recorded this year, 340 were fatal road traffic accidents in which 396 people died.
“1, 147 were serious road traffic accidents in which 673 persons were seriously injured during the period under review as compared to 1, 187 persons seriously injured in 637 serious road traffic accidents recorded the same period in 2017, indicating a decrease by 40 persons seriously injured and an increase in serious road traffic accidents by 36,” she said.
“1, 960 persons sustained minor injuries in 1, 578 slight road traffic accidents during the first quarter of 2018 compared to 2, 265 persons slightly injured in 1, 264 slight road traffic accidents in the same period in 2017, showing a decrease by 305 persons slightly injured and an increase by 314 slight road traffic accidents. The total number of casualties in the first quarter of 2018 is 3, 503 as compared to 3,932 casualties in 2017,” she said.
Katongo said Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of accidents with 3,822 accidents with 106 deaths.
She said the Copperbelt followed with 1, 199 accidents with 89 deaths.
“Central had 460 accidents with 43 deaths, Southern had 409 accidents with 17 deaths, Eastern had 361 accidents with 30 deaths and Northern Province had 132 accidents with 13 deaths. Other Provinces are North Western with 344 accidents in which 36 people died, Muchinga had 192 accidents with 21 deaths, Luapula had 174 accidents with 30 deaths, Northern with 132 accidents with 13 deaths,” said Katongo.
