Chinese contractor disappoints State House

Special Assistant to the President for project monitoring and implementation Andrew Chellah has expressed disappointment with China Jiangxi, a contractor that has been paying Zambian workers K17 per day.
Chellah observed that the K17 per day which amounted to a monthly income of K500 was below the K1, 132 minimum wage for general workers, and should not be tolerated anywhere in the country.
“The low wages being paid to the Zambian employees is a mockery and China Jiangxi, which is building the K44 million Chasefu Secondary Boarding School in Lundazi district, should next month improve the working conditions for the local people. It is also disappointing that you had packed the boots when the labourers are carrying out their work without protective gear. And I’m wondering why the employers opted to keep the protective boots when the employees are working without protective gear,” said Chellah.
And challah expressed sadness with district officials that had already started recruiting teachers and pupils for the unfinished school.
Meanwhile, Lundazi district commissioner Janet Palukani said pupils and teachers were diverted to a neighbouring school as a temporary measure.
Palukani called for a quick completion of the project to ensure communities were serve defectively.
