Floods leave 16 Chama families homeless

About 16 households in various villages in Chief Kambombo’s area in Chama district of Muchinga Province have been left homeless by floods.
This is due to heavy rains the district has received in the past few days.
Zambia News Information Services in Chama reported that Mphalausenga Ward councilor Sam Sichomba named the affected villages as Pendwe, Kazembe and Kasengele.
Sichomba also said floods had washed away some maize fields and roads.
He said the same floods had broken apart the Chama-Kambombo road, cutting out residents in the two affected areas.
“I’m appealing to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit and the office of Chama District Commissioner to come in and help the affected families. The 2017/2018 farming season is difficult one with a lot of challenges and there will be no bumper harvest to be recorded this farming season,” lamented Sichomba.
“The matter has been reported to the office of the District Commissioner and we are waiting from them to act on the matter quickly.”
Meanwhile Chama District Commissioner Leonard Ngoma assured that the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit team was on the ground making assessments so that the victims were helped.
“I’m appealing to people in the communities to desist from building their houses or cultivating their crops near the river as this has caused a lot of problems to farmers,” said Ngoma.
