By Staff Reporter

The government has fired over 117 members of staff, including lecturers at Nkwame Nkrumah University in Kabwe.

Since last week, staff at the state university have been protesting low salaries and poor conditions of service.

Higher Education minister Professor NKANDU Luo has since declared their positions vacant and they would be advertised soon.

Addressing members of staff on Wednesday, University Registrar, Gubula Siachiti said the Ministry of Higher Education had declared 83 academic lecturers and 38 support staff under the Ministry of General Education jobs vacant.

He said all affected members of staff would have to apply for their positions once advertised.

Lectures and management at the institution had been engaged in a standoff which led to the indefinite closure of the institution on Monday February 12.
