NUPPEZ bemoans poor pupil-teacher ratio

The National Union of Public and Private Educators of Zambia (NUPPEZ) has bemoaned the uneven pupil-teacher ratio in the country.
In an interview, national secretary Nelson Mwale said the Ministry of General Education should help address the challenge of inadequate teachers in primary schools in the country.
Mwale said his organisation was concerned about the current situation as it leaved much to be desired.
“We wondered how a single teacher would effectively carry out their mandate against a pupil population of over 70 per class. The challenges, more in rural areas, are not new and we call for urgent measures to be instituted in a bid to mitigate the problem,” he said.
“This is contributing to the poor examination results in various schools, as one teacher is failing to handle more than 70 pupils in one class.
And Mwale said he has been pleading with the Rural Electrification Authority (REA), to connect rural areas to the national grid in order to steer development in remote areas.
“If many rural areas can be connected to the national grid it will greatly help rural parts of the country to development and boost the economic sector,” said Mwale.
