Govt defends high project fees at St Mary’s School

The Ministry of General Education has called on management at St Mary’s Secondary School in Lusaka and parents to devise flexible payment terms for project fund.
Permanent Secretary, Henry Tukombe said the ministry was aware of the school project fund that would go towards the construction of the double storey classroom block.
Speaking to Zambia News and Information Service Tukombe, who spoke through the Ministry’s spokesperson Nondo Chilonga at a press briefing today, stressed that parents and school authorities ought to agree on how the categories of K6, 000 and K10, 000 project fund would be paid out.
Meanwhile, Parents Teacher Committee (PTC) Chairperson Mabvuso Sinda clarified that the school needed over K4 million to complete the project.
“It was agreed during the PTA meeting that each grade eight pupil should pay K10, 000 as project fund just for this year, stating that the returning students would pay K6, 000 each. The building will help eradicate the shortage on classrooms at the school and enhance the quality of education,” Sinda said.
He said for the past 10 years school fees had been maintained at K3, 900 per year.
