Activists, Pilato, Miti and Others Face Prosecution

DIRECTOR of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has issued instructions for the prosecution of six governance activists including Fumba Chama popularly known as Pilato, Laura Miti and opposition political leader Sean Tembo for disobedience of lawful orders.
It is alleged that on September 29, 2017 Miti, Tembo, Chama, Bonwell Mwewa, Lewis Mwape and Mika Mwambazi did disobey a lawful order issued by the Zambia police to stop demonstrating at parliament buildings.
Facts are that the six accused persons organised a demonstration at Parliament buildings and picket members of parliament over the purchase of the fire trucks which cost the treasury US$42 million.
When the matter came up for plea before Lusaka Magistrate Mwaka Mikalile, the accused could not take plea as only two of the six were present before court
Magistrate Mikalile extended the accused’s police bond and adjourned the matter to January 29, 2018 for plea.
