73 year old villager shot and wounded in Gwembe District.

Unknown people shot and wounded a  73 year old villager on January 10, in Gwembe District, Southern Province.

Gwembe District police officer in-charge, Chief Inspector Nicholas  Kabwe when contacted for comment referred all queries to Monze Officer Commanding, Patrick Mubukwanu whose phone went unanswered.

However,  Gwembe acting district commissioner  Justus Phiri confirmed the shooting saying it was sad that old people are the targets of the shootings in the district.

Phiri  said his office was saddened with the development and that the community was now living in fear because of the proliferation of illegal home made guns which have fueled violence against the aged on allegations of practicing witchcraft.

He added that the police are working tirelessly in both chiefdoms in the district to bring the culprits to book.

The victim identified as Samuel Mwinde of Sianjalika village in Kkoma ward of chief Chipepo in Gwembe district was shot at his home at around 21:00 hours as he was entering his house.

The matter was reported to the police the following day were still investigating while the victim was admitted at Gwembe district hospital.

Earlier this month, in the Bondo area of chief Chipepo in Gwembe district a man was shot dead by his brother.

The deceased, Lawrence Kanyengele aged 49 was shot dead as he was coming from a drinking spree on suspicions of practicing witchcraft.

The body was taken to Gwembe district hospital mortuary where a postmortem was conducted.

Gwembe police investigated and later arrested the suspect identified as Emerson Kanyengele aged 46 and  is in police custody awaiting court appearance.
