ZNUT Ties Poor Examination Results to lack of motivation for teachers

By Staff Reporter

Motivation of teachers is key to the performance of pupils in schools, says Southern Province Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) Organising Secretary Kennedy Sumbwanyambe.

Commenting on the Grade 7 and 9 results announced last week by general education minister Dr. Dennis Wanchinga, which places Southern Province’s pass rating behind Northwestern and Northern provinces, Sumbwanyambe said lack of motivation, allowances and unnecessary transfers as some of the factors that affect output from the teachers.

Sumbwanyambe applauded Southern Province for not recording any examination papers leakages due to improved security during examinations.

He said although Southern Provinces had lost its traditional top position in terms of pass rate compared to other provinces, there was a nominal progression rate compared to last year’s results.

Dr. Wachinga last week said grade seven results had recorded an 98.6% national progress rate, up from 97.6% recorded in 2016 while grade nine results also recorded an increase from 49.5% in 2016 to 52.2 this year.

He says out of the 364,546 who sat for grade seven examinations this year , 357,763  had been selected to grade eight.

The minister explained that all provinces except Lusaka have recorded a one hundred percent pass rate at grade seven level.

On the Grade nine results, out of 308,060 candidates who sat for 2017  grade nine  examinations, 162,539 have been selected to grade ten.

The Minister disclosed that Northwestern province has recorded high passing rate followed by Northern province, Southern  and Eastern provinces  at grade nine.
