Zimba district in a water crisis

By Staff Reporter

Zimba district in Southern Province has been hit by a critical shortage of water for about two weeks now.

The newly declared district has not received piped water for about two weeks now as the water utility company, Southern Water and Sewerage (SWASCO) has hit a snag in supplying piped water, arising from the Sianankanga Dam water source that has dried up.

Residents have described the situation as a disaster that needs quick and concerted attention, before the young district is overwhelmed by water related diseases.

The residents have complained of having to brave the night, the time they should be sleeping to stand in long queues as they await a chance to fetch water at the few available water pumps.

Meanwhile, SWASCO Public Relations Officer, Lungowe Masupa has said that the water utility company is supplying water to the community in Zimba using water bulsers, adding that they have sunk two water pumps to help mitigate the crisis.

Masupa said although residents say the intervention is not enough to service Zimba’s growing population, they will have to make do with the current intervention while a lasting solution is being sought.
