State withdraws GBM ‘militia’ case

The state has discontinued the case in which opposition United Party for National Development vice-president Goeffrey Bwalya Mwamba was arrested and charged for preparing ‘militia’ in the run up to the 2016 presidential and general elections.
State prosecutor Michael Nundwe made an application before magistrate Mwaka Mikalile on Monday to have the matter discontinued because the matter was complicated. Appearing before Mwaka Mikalile were GBM and others who were facing charges of preparing militia.
Among the grounds advanced for the discontinuation of the case were that the case was too big and needed to be broken down into smaller units against each of the individuals arrested to respond to the current court system. It was also noted that the case had taken too long without trial as proved by the challenges faced even just in the fixing of dates for trial.
