A headman in chief Chikuwe area of Kasenengwa district has expressed concern over illegal export of maize by vendors to some neighboring countries.

Speaking to newsdayzambia.com Wickson Lungu who is headman Chinthona said it was sad that government remained quiet on the vendors who are buying maize from the poor farmers which they export to Malawi and Dr Congo.

Lungu said the 2018/19 farming season was not okay and a lot of farmers experience poor harvest which was being exploited by vendors.

“If you see in this country a lot of areas have no maize and vendors are now buying the maize and sell to DR Congo and Malawi, and this will disadvantage Zambians because we will not have any maize in our country,” said Lungu

He advised the Food Reserve Agency to quickly purchase the maize from the farmers and secure for national consumption.

“Our surprise is that government has remained quiet over this matter and yet this maize is passing through our boarders,” he said

Meanwhile, the Food Reserve Agency has set K110 as maize floor price for a 50kg bag for the 2019 maize marketing season.
