A 20-year-old woman of Kwajoya village in Chief Mshawa’s area in Chipata district has been arrested for stealing a baby at Chipata Central Hospital.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Luckson Sakala said a three day old baby was stolen yesterday, June 25, around 14 hours from its mother Victoria Phiri, aged 16 of Mchini compound.

Sakala said the incident happened when the mother to the baby went outside the ward to call her mother, as she was about to be discharged from the hospital.

He said the baby was recovered by members of the public at the Down Shops where the suspect was about to board a taxi going to her village.

“The suspect Esther Mwanza is currently in police custody and will appear in court soon for the charge of child stealing,” said Sakala

And a bicycle operator who was booked by the suspect said he was suspicious because the suspect had no one to help her carry the child.
