President Edgar Lungu has pledged to support neighbouring countries that might have food deficits owing to natural disasters.<\/p>\n
And Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo said that it is his ministry\u2019s desire to ensure that Correctional Facilities become self-sustaining.<\/p>\n
Speaking when monitoring progress of the World Bank funded industrialised borehole project at the Zambia Correctional Service Facility at Mukuyu Farm in Kabwe on Friday afternoon, President Edgar Lungu observed some neighbouring countries experienced some disasters this rainy season and were likely to have food deficits; hence the need for the Zambian government to come to the aid of such countries in an effort to avert hunger.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur colleagues in Mozambique were faced with disasters . . . the same is happening in Malawi and Zimbabwe. So we have to share the crop yields that we have. There\u2019s a crisis in the region,\u201d said President Lungu.<\/p>\n
President implored the Zambia Correctional Facilities to be proactive and devise mechanisms that would spur agriculture diversification and, subsequently; ensure that the country and the region was food secure.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope you have improved from where I left [as Minister of Home Affairs] and made strides in ensuring that sustainable agriculture is attained,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
And President Lungu advised authorities in the Zambia Correctional Facilities to ignore critics that were against the idea of using inmates to facilitate development activities in detention facilities.<\/p>\n
The Head of State stated that some individuals were saying that the use of incarcerated people by the Zambia Correctional Facility was tantamount to violation of human rights.<\/p>\n
President Lungu observed that the using inmates to undertake agricultural and other activities was aimed at ensuring that incarcerated individuals acquire various skills when being reintegrated into society.<\/p>\n
And Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo said that it is his ministry\u2019s desire to ensure that Correctional Facilities become self-sustaining.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur desire as a ministry is to ensure that Correctional Facilities do not put a burden on the National Treasury in terms of feeding. We want to ensure that Correctional Facilities become self-sustaining,\u201d said Kampyongo.<\/p>\n
He commended President Lungu for embarking on the construction of housing units for men and women in uniforms when the Head of State served as home affairs and defence minister.<\/p>\n
Kampyongo said the construction of housing units for men and women in uniforms had been a motivating factor to the officers.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Kampyongo sneered members of opposition political parties that were \u201cin habit of criticising the hard working PF government.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Shiwang\u2019andu lawmaker bragged that the PF government under the leadership of President Lungu was working hard to ensuring that it puts food on the table for citizens; yet some individuals from opposition political parties were \u201cbusy talking ill of the government of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs members of the PF, you should be proud that the PF government under the able leadership of His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu is working hard no kumona ukuti twabika ifilyo pa table [to ensuring that we put food on the table. But ba opposition balelandafye utwa kulandalanda [Members of the opposition are just engaging in cheap talking]. Your Excellency, you should not be distracted on fulfilling you development agenda,\u201d said Kampyongo.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Zambia Correctional Facilities commissioner general Dr. Chileshe Chisela explained that Correctional Facilities were employing mechanised farming with a view to ensuring that the country was food secure.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can play a pivotal role in ensuring that Zambia becomes a food basket in the region,\u201d said Dr. Chisela.<\/p>\n
The World Bank funded industrialised borehole project at the Zambia Correctional Service Facility Mukuyu Farm is being constructed at a cost of $2.5 million and is 90 per cent complete;<\/p>\n
It has six centre pivots and has the capacity to pump 14,000 cubic litres of water, with each centre pivot covering 50 hectres of land.<\/p>\n
