{"id":8444,"date":"2019-02-13T13:55:42","date_gmt":"2019-02-13T13:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsdayzambia.com\/?p=8444"},"modified":"2019-02-13T14:02:28","modified_gmt":"2019-02-13T14:02:28","slug":"upnd-retains-sesheke-parliamentary-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsdayzambia.com\/?p=8444","title":{"rendered":"UPND retains Sesheke parliamentary seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Staff Reporter<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>UPND candidate Romeo Kang\u2019ombe has been declared winner of the Sesheke parliamentary by-election after polling 7,768, ahead of the closest rival Dean Masule of the ruling Patriotic Front with 3,297 following provisional results.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, PF deputy general secretary Mumbi Phiri blamed the police for \u2018participating\u2019 in the violence perpetuated by the ruling party and the arch-rivals, UPND.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Returning Officer Joseph Kanyemba this morning announced Kang\u2019ombe as the winner after counting and tallying the received 35 of the 43 polling stations results.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kanyemba announced that People\u2019s Alliance Congress candidate Charity Muhau scored 137 votes, Victor Kalimukwa of United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia had 141 votes, Masule had 3, 297 and Kang\u2019ommbe had 7,768 votes while rejected votes were 76.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, in accordance with the electoral process Act 73 (b), having ascertained, tallied the results and considered the results of the remaining number of registered voters of 3,164 in the eight polling stations remaining that it will have no effect on the outcome of the election results received so far, I Joseph Goefrey Kanyimba, being the returning officer for Sesheka by-election do hereby declare that Romeo Kang\u2019ombe of the United Party for National Development is having duly been elected as member of parliament,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Soon after the declaration, UPND chairman for elections, Garry Nkombo addressing supporters in Sesheke, appealed to President Lungu to step up and stop the brutality that characterized elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople of Sesheke have been fed with breakfast, lunch and supper,\u00a0 all they eat is teargas &#8211; we don\u2019t need all that,\u201d Nkombo said. \u201cPresident Lungu, with due respect my friend \u2013 everything has its own time, your time may be now, the future time might not be yours, just remember that what has happened today is that people\u2019s voice has resonated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He thanked all those who participated in the elections and contributed to the victory of Kang\u2019ombe and the party in general.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to thank the PF for their participation, we want to thank everybody who took part in this election,\u201d he said. \u201cRomeo Kang\u2019ombe has been accepted by everybody in Sesheke.
