{"id":8137,"date":"2019-01-30T19:59:53","date_gmt":"2019-01-30T19:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsdayzambia.com\/?p=8137"},"modified":"2019-01-30T20:10:28","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T20:10:28","slug":"maz-anticipates-shortage-of-wheat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsdayzambia.com\/?p=8137","title":{"rendered":"MAZ anticipates shortage of wheat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Staff Reporter<\/p>\n<p>The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) anticipates another shortage of wheat on the market due to reduced production in the last farming season.<\/p>\n<p>Association president Andrew Chintala says to this effect the country is likely to import the product to meet the current increased demand.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview with <em>ZANIS<\/em> in Lusaka yesterday, Chintala disclosed that\u00a0MAZ\u00a0is engaging the Zambia National Farmers Union to establish the available tonnage of wheat and how much would be required to be imported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can confirm that we currently do not have enough wheat to meet the demand on the market, therefore I think we shall need to import the commodity, \u201che said.<\/p>\n<p>Chintala explained that for the last six farming seasons the country has seen a reduction in the production of wheat a situation he says has continued to create a shortage of the product in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He added that many farmers especially in Mkushi in Central Province who were the major producers of commodity have attributed the reduction in production levels to water challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Chintala is however, optimistic that with the opening of the Momboshi dam in Chisamba, production would improve as many farmers will be encouraged to venture into wheat growing.<\/p>\n<p>He also called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders in the agriculture sector to find a lasting solution and ensure that there was increased production of key crops such as wheat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Staff Reporter The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) anticipates another shortage of wheat on the market due to reduced production in the last farming season.
