Fire has swept through Makono royal village in chief Imbwae\u2019s chiefdom in Kalabo district, reducing five houses to ashes.<\/p>\n
Makono village headman Imebo Lubasi has confirmed the fire incident in an interview with Zambia News and Information Service<\/em> (ZANIS) saying the inferno occurred on Saturday.<\/p>\n Headman Imebo said 21 people have been left homeless, eight of whom are male and 13 female.<\/p>\n The traditional leader further disclosed that the victims comprise 12 children aged between 7-14 years, including a four-year old girl, 7 adults aged between 16-35 years and an 81-year-old woman.<\/p>\n He said four of the gutted houses were female headed.<\/p>\n He further disclosed that a grocery shop, which serviced residents of Makono royal village had also been burnt to ashes.<\/p>\n Headman Imebo has since called on government through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to quickly assess the situation and attend to the plight of the affected families in view of the rain season.<\/p>\n He said the fire victims were in urgent need of food, shelter and clothing.<\/p>\n And an eye witness Silukena Mikanga said the fire is suspected to have started from a house where the owner was believed to have gone to fetch water from the Zambezi River.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, a representative\u00a0from Kalabo district chiefs and traditional affairs office Pelekelo Shawana told newsdayZambia.com that the\u00a0\u00a0Kalabo district administrative office\u00a0\u00a0had assisted affected victims in Makono royal village.<\/p>\n \u201cFive tents, food and beddings have been organized by the district commissioner through\u00a0DMMU\u00a0and today we are handing over the items to the victims,\u201d Shawana said. \u201cMakono royal village was established in 1428, it\u2019s a big village and receiving such kind of fire accidents is a drawback\u201d.<\/p>\n Shawana has however appealed to other well-wishers to come to the aid of affected victims in Makono village.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And Kalabo District Commisioner Fridah Luhila\u00a0said the fire was caused by a child who was playing with fire.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n She disclosed\u00a0that a team of officers from DMMU had dispatched some items, which included five tents, 28 bags of mealimeal, 28 blankets\u00a0 and a bag of second hand clothes.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Staff Reporter Fire has swept through Makono royal village in chief Imbwae\u2019s chiefdom in Kalabo district, reducing five houses to ashes.
