{"id":618,"date":"2017-11-06T08:28:11","date_gmt":"2017-11-06T08:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsdayzambia.com\/?p=618"},"modified":"2017-11-06T08:28:11","modified_gmt":"2017-11-06T08:28:11","slug":"us-journalist-faces-20-years-in-prison-for-insulting-mugabe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/newsdayzambia.com\/?p=618","title":{"rendered":"US Journalist Faces 20 Years in Prison For Insulting Mugabe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The journalist is accused of referring to Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe a &#8220;selfish&#8221; and &#8220;sick&#8221; man.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An American journalist in Zimbabwe is facing up to 20 years in prison after being accused of insulting the African nation&#8217;s president\u00a0on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Martha O&#8217;Donovan stands accused of subversion, which carries a maximum sentence of two decades.<\/p>\n<p>She is accused of referring to Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe a &#8220;selfish&#8221; and &#8220;sick&#8221; man.\u00a0The head of state has been\u00a0elected to power\u00a0in every\u00a0vote\u00a0since 1980 and will soon\u00a0seek reelection.<\/p>\n<p>The Twitter post was complemented by an illustration of Mugabe with a catheter.<\/p>\n<p>The New Jersey native is also charged with undermining the authority of or insulting the president.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Breaking News: High drama in Zim as police currently preferring a charge of attempting to overthrow Mugabe govt against @Martha_ODonovan,&#8221; Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, O&#8217;Donovan&#8217;s representative failed to have the \u201csubversion\u201d charge thrown out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our client is vehemently denying both charges,&#8221; her lawyer Obey Shava told AFP, adding that O&#8217;Donovan would apply for bail on Monday at the High Court.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, a human rights lawyer said the arrest was linked to a retweet which did not mention Mugabe by name but referred to a &#8220;goblin whose wife and step-son bought a Rolls-Royce.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mugabe&#8217;s stepson with his wife Grace is believed to have recently imported two Rolls-Royce, according to local media reports.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five-year-old O&#8217;Donovan, who works for a TV station in the Harare area, calls the allegations &#8220;baseless and malicious.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most Zimbabweans do vent on social media about the state of the country, so if they arrest her for this they might as well arrest all Zimbabweans on social media,&#8221; Munya Bloggo, who created the hashtag #FreeMartha, told BuzzFeed News.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think anyone is exempt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The arrest follows Mugabe&#8217;s appointment of a cybersecurity minister last month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This arrest marks the start of a sinister new chapter in the Zimbabwean government&#8217;s clampdown on freedom of speech, and the new battleground is social media,&#8221; Amnesty International&#8217;s deputy regional director Muleya Mwananyanda said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe authorities say they tracked the Oct. 11 tweet to O&#8217;Donovan&#8217;s IP address, before taking her into custody on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Tweets continue to be posted from the account, though O&#8217;Donovan remains in custody.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Donovan is employed\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0Magamba Network\u00a0NGO, which aims to use &#8220;creative forms of youth activism to build a democratic &amp; just Zimbabwe,&#8221;\u00a0and receives\u00a0its funds from\u00a0private foundations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one more violation of our already shrunken human rights space,\u201d Magamba co-founder Tongai Makawa told the Los Angeles Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s terrible and unfortunate.
