From April, 17th<\/sup> to 25th<\/sup> in front of all Brazilian Embassies!<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Days before the\u00a0two-year anniversary of the coup\u00a0d’\u00e9tat,\u00a0Brazil and\u00a0the\u00a0world watched the\u00a0arrest of Lu\u00eds In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva in astonishment. He is the most important popular leader in the country\u00a0during the\u00a0last thirty years\u00a0and\u00a0one of the Presidents\u00a0with the highest levels of international recognition for fighting poverty and reducing inequality.<\/p>\n

The conviction and imprisonment of an innocent man,\u00a0through\u00a0a process with numerous errors and legal absurdities, without evidences and based only on statements from convicted informers in exchange for the benefit of their sentence reductions, represents the continuity\u00a0of the 2016 coup. \u00a0It also reveals the\u00a0abandonment and subversion of\u00a0the Brazilian democratic institutions\u00a0by the right\u00a0wing powers.<\/p>\n

Since\u00a0April 17,\u00a02016,\u00a0the coup makers\u00a0are following a clear roadmap.\u00a0They\u00a0started by impeaching\u00a0President Dilma Rousseff and now they\u00a0advance overwhelmingly into a neoliberal offensive\u00a0with\u00a0new privatizations, handing over natural resources to foreign capital, dismantling the national industry and massive withdrawal of investment and social rights, among other evils.<\/p>\n

At the same time, institutions at the service of\u00a0the ruling classes,\u00a0like sectors of\u00a0the judiciary and the media,\u00a0together seek to\u00a0control the political life of the country and to politically and materially\u00a0erode\u00a0the people\u2019s movements and the leftist forces.\u00a0They built\u00a0a legal theater through an intense defamation campaign\u00a0to arrest an innocent man accusing him of passive corruption and to convict him without evidence.\u00a0That’s why Lula is a political prisoner.<\/p>\n

As a follow up of their strategic project the coup makers seek to legitimize themselves by\u00a0winning\u00a0in the 2018 elections.\u00a0However,\u00a0they know that it\u00a0will only be feasible if they impede the left wings\u2019 victory.\u00a0The\u00a0unfair and hasty conviction\u00a0of Lula\u00a0has the clear intention of withdrawing\u00a0him\u00a0from the electoral dispute, given that\u00a0numerous\u00a0polls show him\u00a0in\u00a0first place.\u00a0Therefore, the coup forces will use any possible means to prevent a people’s victory at the elections.<\/p>\n

Finally,\u00a0we invite all social and political organizations,\u00a0grassroot movements\u00a0and citizens\u00a0who fight against all forms of injustice and arbitrariness\u00a0to gather\u00a0in a broad international campaign for Lula\u2019s\u00a0Freedom.<\/p>\n

With the hashtags\u00a0#FreeLula, #LulaInnocent\u00a0or\u00a0#LulaPoliticalPrisioner, we are encouraging the\u00a0organization of Committees for Lula\u2019s Freedom around the world and for rallies to be held between April 17 and 25 in front of the Brazilian Embassies and Consulates,\u00a0to express\u00a0our rejection of Lula in prison and to stand in solidarity with the former President and\u00a0the Brazilian people.<\/p>\n

In the face of the grave offensive of the Brazilian right wing all the mobilizations between April, 17 and 25 will be of extreme importance, also because we might get new juridical decisions during this period regarding Lula\u2019s right to defend himself in liberty and our support will be important. We inform that the popular peasant movement represented by the Via Campesina International <\/em>is already planning actions on April, 17th<\/sup>, the \u201cInternational Day of Peasant Struggle\u201d in memory of the \u201cEldorado do Caraj\u00e1s Massacre\u201d and the International Confederation of Trade Unions (ITUC) is calling its national affiliates for international demonstrations #FreeLula too on the 23th.<\/p>\n
