A  28-YEAR-OLD man of Asian origin who is accused of calling a Zambian man ‘a black dog’ has pleaded not guilty to a charge of expressing or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt for persons because of race.

Patel Shahnawazy  appeared before Lusaka chief resident magistrate Lameck Mwale and denied the charge.

It is alleged that Shahnawazy on April 24 this year uttered words verbally expressing or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt to Ian Chilenga wholly and mainly because of his tribe, place or original by saying that  ‘You are a black dog’.

Shannawazy, a sales manager at SD Investment, took his plea after State prosecutor Michael Nyundwe informed the court that consent from the Director of Public Prosecution ( DPP) to prosecute the matter was ready.

The accused is on bail and trial is expected to commence on May 31.
